Bridge

One day walking I noticed
That the sidewalk I had walked on
For so many days to the job
Was a crooked one

Tilted and broken as the earth moved
To the same hidden forces that
Fueled the cold wind from the water
Felt as the bridge was crossed

Knuckles clenched like eyes
Missed the view of the sea
And the tall buildings
Chests covered and heads bowed
Even as the seagulls fought and screamed

In the bitter cold
Like the time when
Busy searching for a deeper meaning
Listening to hear where
The glorious steps may fall

Watching signals in between
The quick shift in traffic lights
Didn't look where we walked
As the days grew short
Trying to make it shorter, but how?
Across the tilted and cracked walk
